![]() In either case, infinity comes around what the focus scale claims is about 0.5m. Although it fits ok on my 5DIV, it's a little loose even on my metabones Sony adapter. I don't have one of the Laowa 15mm f/4 to compare with, but the simple EF mount on this Opteka is not well done. I got it in Canon EF mount, so I can use it on my Sonys with either one of my regular adapters or my cheap tilt adapter. I had heard rumors that Laowa was suing Opteka over this, but that was well over a year ago and the Opteka is still for sale new the lower cost is especially compelling for a lens I know I'll be bumping into things with while trying to do macros. and cost me $129.95 new, including shipping. So, as much as I applaud Venus Optics / Laowa on their many innovations, I'm actually a little happier with a 15mm f/4 version that doesn't have shift. In sum, for me, shift is an opportunity for me to screw-up my distortion correction model and not a benefit - especially since I now nearly always shoot FF. but with the tiny working distances for 15mm macros, it's tough to find time to fiddle with any such thing. In fact, given the choice, I think tilt to align the focus plane with a macro subject is more important for this lens than shift. ![]() There's nothing wrong with the Laowa's shift hardware, but this is not one of their "Zero D" lenses, and distortion is way too heavy to go uncorrected for architectural shots. Shifting is mostly useful for maintaining peak image quality by avoiding perspective remapping in postprocessing for things like architectural shots. It's not that Laowa made a bad lens - they didn't - it does everything it should do quite well. The truth is that the only thing I find personally compelling about the Laowa 15mm f/4 is the macro ability. So, why did I buy the disturbingly similar Opteka 15mm f/4 macro and not the "original" Laowa? I really have the greatest respect for what Laowa has been doing. It is a pretty impressive FF ultrawide that is also a true 1:1 macro, and even does shifts of +/-6mm for APS-C. A very innovative lens the Laowa is, and not too pricey at $499. ![]() wasn't Laowa (Venus Optics) the one that came out with the wildly innovative 15mm f/4 FF macro?" The answer is that yes, they were. If you read that title, you should be thinking: "Wait a second.
